I’ve been watching a lot of NewsRadio lately, a sitcom from the 90s for which I have a lot of affection. I think it may have been my first “favorite show,” if I ignore such childhood indulgences as Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Animaniacs and so on. I remember watching when it first ran on NBC, then the syndication on A&E, then the DVDs when I was in college. Some of the magic seems to fade with the passing years, but I still like to watch it when I’m feeling nostalgic. Something that caught my attention today was a quote by a soon-to-be-dead Phil Hartman on the nature of friends.
“There comes a time in every friendship where you have to say: I never liked you, get lost.”
The fact that this essentially sums up every major friendship in my life fills me with all kinds of melancholy. Thanks a lot, zany 90s sitcom.
